The progression of establishment and development of the Faculty of Fisheries (FoF) is closely related to those of the Nong Lam University, Ho Chi Minh City (NLU). The Faculty’s precursor was the Department of Fisheries belonging to the Faculty of Animal Sciences of the Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture (the other former name of NLU), a member of the Institute of Polytechnic University at Thu Duc. By 1974, FoF was officially established (according to the Law 010/SL/VH/GDTN issued on 11 January, 1974).

After the reunification of the country, the name has changed to the FoF and remained up to now with the task of training undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research and transfer of science and technology, and establish local and international cooperations. Currently, the FoF has five (5) departments (Dept. of Aquatic Biology and Resources Management, Dept. of Aquaculture Technology, Dept. of Aquaculture Pathology, Dept. of Fisheries Management and Development, and Dept. of Aquatic Product Processing Technology), one (1) experimental farm for students to conduct practical sessions and experiments, and five (5) laboratories. The FoF currently has 31 staff members, among them 24 are lecturers including two (02) with Associate Professor title holders (8.3%), 13 with Ph.D degree (54.2%), and nine (9) with M.Sc degree (37.5%) who were trained locally and abroad such as USA , United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Thailand. The rest seven (7) are support staff members.

The development strategies are:

- To build the FoF to become not only the training institution but also the center of research and transfer of science and technology in the field of fisheries that meets the educational quality accreditation of national standards and are oriented toward those of the ASEAN university network (AUN-QA) for Aquaculture program in 2022 in order to satisfy the needs of training highly qualified human resources, serving the socio-economic development in the country and the region;
- To mobilize resources for scientific research, creating quality products, advanced technical and management solutions, promoting the development of aquaculture for important species (Pangasius, marine shrimp, tilapia, etc.) and a number of indigenous specialty aquatic species (Dua catfish, spotted scat, Anguilla eel...) of the aquaculture industry towards value enhancement and sustainable development;
- To apply the achievements of Industry 4.0 in breeding, environmental management and animal health, farming process management and product traceability, contributing to the development of Vietnam's seafood industry in the future.
